Immunization Gaps Persist in Pakistan; Balochistan Lags at 54%

Islamabad: Despite allocating billions of rupees annually to its immunization efforts, Pakistan has yet to achieve full vaccine coverage for children across the country, official data reveals.

According to the latest figures from the Directorate of Immunization, while overall progress has been made, the country still falls short of the 100 percent target.

Islamabad and Punjab currently lead the way with 90 percent coverage, followed by Sindh at 84 percent, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa at 79 percent, and Balochistan trailing with only 54 percent.

Director General of Immunization Dr. Sofia noted that the program has steadily improved over the years. “A few years ago, our national average was around 54 percent. Now, we are aiming to push beyond 95 percent,” she said.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Rashida Syed credited Islamabad’s impressive performance to consistent efforts and strong political will. “We’ve crossed the 90 percent mark. With continued dedication, we’re confident full coverage is achievable,” she stated.

Minister of State for Health, Dr Mukhtar Bharath, acknowledged the strides made in provinces like Punjab but emphasized the need for urgent interventions in underperforming regions.

“Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan still face serious gaps in immunization coverage. Sindh is progressing, but unless every province reaches at least 90 percent, effective disease control will remain out of reach,” he warned.

Health experts say achieving nationwide immunization coverage is critical to preventing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases and safeguarding public health.
