VISAKHAPATNAM: In a groundbreaking moment for global sports broadcasting, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced artificial intelligence into live match coverage, using Google’s Gemini AI to deliver the first-ever AI-powered pitch report during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

Former Indian captain Mithali Raj became the face of this technological debut, using the Gemini Live feature on her phone to provide a real-time pitch analysis ahead of the India–South Africa clash at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

By simply pointing her camera at the pitch and asking about the conditions, Mithali received an instant AI-generated report. Gemini analyzed the visuals and weather data, describing the surface as “smooth and batter-friendly” with minimal grass cover, predicting a high-scoring game due to the humid weather limiting swing.

Mithali, impressed by the AI’s accuracy, endorsed its findings — noting that the pitch was indeed ideal for batters. “It’s fascinating to see technology interpreting conditions so precisely,” she said, highlighting the growing role of digital intelligence in enhancing cricket analysis.

This marks a historic shift in sports presentation, where AI not only supports commentators and analysts but also delivers rapid, data-backed insights directly to fans. The ICC’s successful integration of Gemini AI demonstrates how technology can bridge human expertise and machine intelligence, potentially transforming pre-match coverage, commentary, and tactical analysis.

With this pioneering use of AI, the ICC has opened the door to a new era of smart sports broadcasting, where future tournaments could see real-time AI commentary, player performance forecasting, and dynamic fan engagement powered by advanced data tools.

The initiative underscores cricket’s readiness to embrace innovation — turning traditional insights into interactive, intelligent storytelling for a global audience.
