Islamabad: With less than a month remaining before South Africa and Australia face off in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a significantly increased prize pool for the 2023–25 edition.

The total prize money for the WTC 2023–25 Final is set at USD $5.76 million, more than double the amount offered in the previous two cycles. The champions will take home USD $3.6 million, a considerable increase from the USD $1.6 million awarded in both 2021 and 2023. The runners-up will receive USD $2.16 million, also a notable jump from the previous USD $800,000.

To mark the 30-day countdown to what’s being called the “Ultimate Test,” the ICC released a promotional video featuring key players and legends of the game. Current stars such as South Africa’s Temba Bavuma, Kagiso Rabada, and Aiden Markram and Australia’s Steve Smith and Travis Head appear alongside cricketing greats like Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn, Matthew Hayden, Mel Jones, Nasser Hussain, Shoaib Akhtar, and Ravi Shastri.

Road to the Final

South Africa topped the WTC25 standings, becoming the first team to book their place at Lord’s. Their path included series victories over Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, as well as a drawn series at home against India.

Australia secured their final berth with a 3-1 series win over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Their strong performance also featured a 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan, and away series wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Statements from ICC and Captains

ICC Chair Jay Shah praised the third WTC cycle, saying:

“We’ve seen a thrilling edition of the World Test Championship, with the finalists confirmed only in the final stages. The final between these two top sides promises to be a true showcase of Test cricket. On behalf of the ICC, I wish both teams the best as they prepare for this prestigious match at Lord’s.”

Australian captain Pat Cummins expressed pride in defending the title:
