‘I Was Shivering and Fainted’: Sania Mirza Speaks About Divorce
News Desk
Islamabad: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has opened up about her divorce from Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, describing it as the “worst experience” of her life that led her to suffer a panic attack.
During a live show, Mirza recalled the moment following her divorce when she lost consciousness, saying, “I was shivering,” and had to be assisted by the director and choreographer to manage the situation.
While hosting the show, filmmaker Farah Khan praised Mirza for handling her highs and lows with grace. Mirza expressed gratitude towards Khan for supporting her during her difficult times, saying, “If Farah had not come and said, ‘No matter what, you are going, and doing this show,’ I would not have done it. I would have left.”
She added, “I remember, at my lowest moment after the divorce, you showed up at my set. I had to go on a live show right after that, and till today…”
Mirza and Malik parted ways after 12 years of marriage. Malik has since married actor Sana Javed, marking his third marriage.
Recently, Indian media highlighted a cryptic Instagram post by Mirza reflecting on marriage and divorce. She wrote: “Marriage is hard. Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard.
Choose your hard. Being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard. Communication is hard. Not communicating is hard. Choose your hard. Life will never be easy. It will always be hard. But we can choose our hard. Pick wisely.”
Mirza’s candid remarks shed light on her emotional journey post-divorce and her approach to resilience and self-determination.
Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik shared a high-profile marriage that lasted 12 years, bringing together two of South Asia’s most celebrated sports personalities. The couple tied the knot in 2010, merging their public and personal lives in ways that frequently made headlines across India and Pakistan.
Throughout their marriage, they were admired for managing demanding professional careers—Mirza as a tennis superstar and Malik as Pakistan’s cricket captain—while raising their children.
Despite their public image of harmony, the marriage faced challenges over the years, eventually leading to their separation, revealing the personal struggles behind a relationship often viewed through the lens of fame and success.
