‘1 Billion People Live with Hypertension’

Abbottabad: More than one billion people around the world live with hypertension (high blood pressure), which is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide, said Ayub Medical College Dean Dr Umer Farooq.
World Hypertension Day was observed on Wednesday with a theme to measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer, and focus on combating low awareness rates worldwide, especially in low- to middle-income areas, and accurate blood pressure measurement methods.
Dr Umer stated that the aim of World Hypertension Day is to raise awareness about high blood pressure and how to prevent and deal with its complications.

He informed that two-thirds of cases of hypertension are found in low- and middle-income countries. This is partly because risk factors have risen in those populations over the past few decades, he added.
Dean stated that the National Health Survey of Pakistan estimated that 33 per cent of people over the age of 45 and 18 per cent of adults in Pakistan have hypertension.
According to another study, 18 per cent of Pakistanis have hypertension, and every third person over 40 is becoming more susceptible to a wide range of ailments.
To prevent high blood pressure and its repercussions, Dean Umer advised people to adopt a nutritious diet and lead an active lifestyle. He further said, “Keep a healthy weight, be physically active, abstain from smoking, and get enough sleep.”
