HRCP Demands Immediate Restoration of Cellular Services

News Desk

Islamabad: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), civil society, and journalist bodies have urged the government to promptly restore cellular and internet services nationwide.

Despite the Sindh High Court’s directive to the caretaker government to ensure uninterrupted internet services on polling day, the ongoing disruption persists.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) asserts that it has not received any instructions from the government to block internet services, creating a concerning lack of transparency regarding the duration and specifics of the disruption.

This situation jeopardizes voters’ right to information and potentially hinders the timely transmission of election results.

It is imperative to identify and hold accountable those responsible for issuing such orders.

According to a DigiMAP tweet, journalists and voters are facing significant challenges due to internet shutdowns in various areas.

This difficulty in accessing the internet hampers the reporting of any issues related to the voting process and diminishes the transparency of the elections. DigiMAP strongly opposes any measures that impede this transparency.

In a separate tweet, General Secretary of DigiMAP also expressed concern, stating, “As anticipated, there is a shutdown of mobile internet and cellular services on election day. Voters are unable to find their polling stations through the 8300 SMS service. Reporting and highlighting irregularities in the elections have become challenging. Controversies surrounding the elections have emerged even before the polls conclude.”

Aftab Alam, Chief Executive of IRADA, tweets, as “On the day of #Election2024, mobile internet is unavailable in Pakistan. Here’s the impact of an internet shutdown during elections!”

It is a developing report.
