How Pakistan’s Prime Minister is Chosen

News Desk

Islamabad: As per the Constitution of Pakistan, any candidate vying for the position of Prime Minister in the National Assembly must be a Muslim MNA.

Before the initiation of the Prime Ministerial election process, the Speaker will order the ringing of bells for five minutes.

Once the bells cease, the doors of the National Assembly will be locked, prohibiting anyone from entering or exiting the chamber until the Leader of the House is elected.

Following this, the Speaker will announce the names of the nominees for the Prime Minister’s position in the National Assembly.

Each nominee will be assigned a specific lobby by the Speaker—the right lobby for one candidate and the left lobby for the other. Members will then proceed to their respective lobbies to cast their votes.

Upon completion of the voting process, the Speaker will declare the closure of the National Assembly voting and ring the bells again for two minutes to signal for members to return from the lobby to the chamber.

Subsequently, the Speaker will announce the election results for the Leader of the House in the National Assembly. The successful candidate will assume the role of Leader of the National Assembly and thereby the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
