Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has announced a series of initiatives to address traffic congestion and reduce air pollution in the city.

RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza stated that the authority’s measures focus on expanding pedestrian streets, developing additional parking facilities, and creating dedicated tracks for cyclists and motorcyclists along key city routes, such as Kutchery Chowk to Faizabad on Murree Road.

These steps are part of a broader strategy to improve urban planning, enhance pedestrian safety, and promote eco-friendly transport options. “We aim to make the city more accessible and environmentally friendly,” said Murtaza, adding that efforts include transforming bazaars into pedestrian zones and relocating cattle markets and transport hubs along GT Road.

To address illegal housing, RDA is scrutinizing over 200 unauthorized housing schemes that have financially harmed residents. A public advisory has been issued, urging citizens to verify the legal status of housing projects before investing.

Additionally, RDA has placed a ban on new housing developments on agricultural land and the cutting of trees to protect green spaces, with the Municipal Corporation instructed to clear encroachments along main routes.

These efforts are aimed at transforming Rawalpindi into a model city with improved infrastructure, sustainable development, and enhanced quality of life for its residents. “Our vision is to create a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant urban environment,” said the DG.
