How Does Google’s New AI Theft Detection Lock Work on Android Phones

News Desk

Islamabad: Google is rolling out a new AI-driven feature for Android phones designed to prevent unauthorized access by locking devices if they are stolen. This “theft detection lock” will be available for smartphones running Android 10 or newer, according to Forbes.

Mishaal Rahman, who frequently shares updates on operating systems, announced on X that the feature is currently being tested in Brazil with a select group of users who joined the beta program.

The theft detection lock works by automatically securing the phone when it detects sudden movements that are commonly associated with theft. It uses data from the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to identify these suspicious motions.

Rahman also noted that Google plans to extend this AI-powered feature to all Android 10 devices through Google Play Services.

This feature was first previewed by Google in May, when Suzanne Frey, Google’s Vice President of Product, Trust, and Growth, highlighted that the company would be introducing a new set of advanced theft protection features.

These are designed to enhance security before, during, and after a theft attempt.
