Islamabad: On World Diabetes Day, health experts emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, effective management, and lifestyle adjustments to combat diabetes, urging policymakers to make diabetes care more accessible and affordable.

Renowned General Physician, Professor Dr Javed Akram, expressed concern over Pakistan’s escalating diabetes epidemic in an interview with a private news channel.

He warned that diabetes, often termed a “silent killer,” can severely damage kidneys and other essential organs if left unchecked.

However, he noted that the disease can be controlled with a 35-minute daily walk, maintaining a healthy weight, a balanced diet, and an active lifestyle.

“Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, balancing carbohydrate intake with physical activity, and monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol are key strategies,” he added.

Furthermore, he noted that every 1 kg of weight loss can reduce diabetes risk by 16%, while regular physical activity can lower it by 30%.

Dr Akram encouraged consulting healthcare professionals and joining support groups for better guidance.
