High Alert: Flood Threats in Punjab, KP, Sindh and Islamabad

News Desk

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide flood alert, warning of potential flash floods, urban inundation, and glacial water surges due to a strong southwest monsoon system coupled with a westerly wave.

The alert, effective from July 19 to 25, has urged the public to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines until Friday.

The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has issued impact-based weather advisories for vulnerable districts across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Islamabad. The expected heavy rainfall poses significant risks to low-lying and mountainous communities, with potential disruptions in daily life and transportation.

The NDMA has directed local disaster management authorities to stay on high alert, expedite drainage clearance, and mobilize emergency response teams. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during heavy downpours, and follow updates through the NDMA’s Disaster Alert App.

Low to moderate rainfall in KP

Low to moderate rainfall is forecast to continue through July 25, with a heightened risk of flash flooding in the upper catchments of major rivers. River Kabul at Nowshera, along with tributaries including the Swat, Panjkora, Bara, and Kalpani Nullah, may see rising water levels due to glacial melting and rain-induced inflows. Transportation disruptions and flood threats remain significant in low-lying and hilly areas.

Strong Monsoon Punjab and Islamabad

Strong monsoon currents are expected to affect central and upper Punjab and Islamabad from July 21 to 24. Cities such as Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Taunsa, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan are likely to experience moderate to heavy rains. Urban flooding is anticipated in low-lying zones and metropolitan areas.

Low to moderate rainfall in Sindh

Low to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast between July 19 and 24 in districts including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Thatta, Badin, Larkana, Jamshoro, Nawabshah, and Mirpurkhas. Urban flooding risks remain high, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and underpasses.

The NDMA has emphasized the importance of clearing drainage systems and ensuring emergency teams are fully prepared. Citizens are also urged to keep household drainage outlets clear, secure essential belongings, and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rain.
