Bahawalpur: Heavy rains have brought much-needed relief to the Cholistan desert, filling approximately 1,100 ponds with rainwater and allowing self-growing shrubs, herbs, and plants to flourish across the arid landscape.
The rains, which have occurred intermittently over the past month, have benefitted the vast desert region spread over tens of thousands of acres in the three districts of Bahawalpur division.
Reports from various localities in Cholistan, including Toba Pathani, Toba Sohb, Toba Balochni, Toba Kakri, Toba Lakhan Wala, Toba Naso Wala, Toba Dheri, Toba Sheikhan, Toba Katwal, Toba Bohar Wala, Toba Qasai Wala, and Toba Bansi, confirmed the filling of natural water ponds after the rains.
Local inhabitants, such as Malik Mitho, Taj Khan, Malik Sabir, Malik Sajid, Malik Munir Langah, and Malik Gul, expressed their relief. “The heavy rains have warded off the threat of drought in Cholistan.
The once-empty ponds are now filled with rainwater, ensuring enough water for both our families and livestock for the current season,” they said.
They also noted that the abundant rain has led to the growth of herbs, shrubs, and plants across the desert, providing ample fodder for thousands of cattle, including buffalo, cows, goats, as well as wildlife.
