Heavy Rains Lash Twin Cities, Emergency Declared

Islamabad: Intermittent rainfall has been battering Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and nearby areas since last night, with more showers expected today (Friday), according to ARY News citing the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The heavy downpour has caused severe disruption across the twin cities. In response, Pakistan Army troops have been deployed to assist in ongoing relief and rescue operations.

Due to the worsening weather conditions, a flood and rain emergency has been declared across the Rawalpindi Division. A spokesperson from the Commissioner’s Office confirmed that all concerned departments and emergency response teams remain on high alert to manage any crisis that may arise.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) in Islamabad to assess the country’s preparedness for the monsoon season and potential flood threats.

During the visit, NDMA Chairman Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik briefed the Prime Minister on the current flood situation, early warning systems, and coordination strategies with provincial and district authorities.

Officials informed the Prime Minister that rainfall levels have exceeded the seasonal average by 30–40%, significantly increasing the risk of flash floods and water overflow in several regions.

In light of this, the Prime Minister instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ensure that flood alerts and emergency warnings are promptly delivered via SMS and mobile notifications.
