Heavy Rains Continue In Southern, Central Pakistan

News Desk

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast that the ongoing spell of torrential rains will continue across southern and central parts of the country throughout this week.

The PMD has reported that a deep depression currently located north of Gujarat, India, is expected to move into adjacent areas of Pakistan, particularly Eastern Sindh, within the next 24 hours. This system is fueling strong monsoon currents, especially in southern Pakistan. Additionally, a westerly wave is anticipated to affect the upper regions of the country from August 29 onwards.

Punjab: Rain-wind/thundershowers, with a few heavy falls, are expected in regions including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Lahore and several other districts from August 27 to 31.

Sindh: Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are predicted in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sukkur, Larkana and other districts from August 27 to 31.

Balochistan: Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers, with scattered heavy falls, are expected in areas such as Khuzdar, Lasbela, Awaran, Naseerabad, Sibbi and others from August 27 to 31.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa: Rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are anticipated in Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Abbottabad, Peshawar and surrounding regions from August 27 to 31.

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan: Rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in various districts from August 27 to 31, with occasional gaps.

There is a high risk of pluvial flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh, Balochistan and South/Central Punjab. The heavy rains may also trigger flash flooding in local nullahs, streams and hill torrents, particularly in Dera Ghazi Khan, Kalat, Khuzdar and other susceptible regions.

Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF): The PMD has warned of a possible Glacier Lake Outburst Flood in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Urban and Coastal Flooding: Urban flooding is likely in low-lying areas of major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi. Coastal flooding may occur along the Sindh-Makran coast during this wet period.

Heavy rains could trigger landslides in hilly regions such as Murree, Galliyat, Swat, Chitral, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Balochistan.

Farmers are advised to plan their activities according to the weather forecast, while travelers and tourists are urged to remain cautious and adjust their plans to avoid dangerous situations. Fishermen in Sindh and Balochistan are warned to avoid venturing into the open sea from August 27 to 31. All relevant authorities are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks.
