Rawalpindi: A powerful spell of rain, accompanied by strong winds, swept through Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded over 65mm of rainfall so far and has forecast more showers later in the week.

The rain began early Tuesday morning and continued intermittently throughout the day, bringing relief from the sweltering heat and high humidity.

According to PMD data, Rawalpindi’s Bokra received 64mm of rainfall, 50mm fell in Pir Wadhai, 54mm in Shamsabad, and 52mm in Islamabad’s Saidpur area.

In response to the heavy rain, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi. Emergency teams and machinery have been deployed in low-lying and flood-prone areas to manage potential urban flooding. The water level in Nullah Lai rose to 10 feet at Katarian and 9 feet at Gawalmandi.

The PMD has issued further rain alerts for Rawalpindi this week and urged both authorities and residents to remain cautious.

Elsewhere, heavy rains and gusty winds were also reported in Kotli and surrounding parts of Azad Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) announced that the monsoon season has officially begun, with the first spell expected to last until July 1.

Rainfall, along with strong winds, is anticipated in several areas including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Gujrat, Jhelum, and Gujranwala. Southern Punjab cities such as Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalpur are also likely to experience showers during this period.
