Heatwave Triggers Soaring Demand for Air Coolers in Twin Cities

Islamabad: As a relentless heatwave grips the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, residents are turning to affordable cooling solutions in record numbers—fueling a sharp surge in air cooler sales across local markets.
With temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages, local retailers report a remarkable increase in demand, with some outlets witnessing up to a 50% rise in sales compared to the same period last year.
“We have never seen such high demand for air coolers in the past,” said Saqib, a retailer in Islamabad’s F-7 market. “The heatwave has been relentless, and people are willing to invest in anything that offers even the slightest relief.” To capitalize on the rush, his store is offering a 10% discount on all models and even providing free installation services.
Retailers across the twin cities are optimistic about continued high demand in the coming weeks. “Summer months always see a surge, but this year it’s started earlier and stronger,” noted a shopkeeper from a popular electronics market in Rawalpindi. “Sales typically peak in June and July, but this time we’re already seeing peak-level activity in early May.”
According to him, air coolers are priced between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 50,000, depending on brand, model, and features. While basic models cater to budget-conscious consumers, high-end units—featuring inverter technology and honeycomb cooling pads—are gaining popularity among those willing to spend more for enhanced comfort.
One emerging trend, retailers say, is the shift towards DC-powered air coolers, prized for their energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness—a crucial factor amid rising electricity bills.
However, the soaring demand has led to a shortage of certain models, with some retailers struggling to restock fast enough to meet customer needs.
For many families, air coolers represent the only viable cooling option amid budget constraints. “We can’t afford an air conditioner, but the heat was becoming unbearable,” said Saima, a resident of Rawalpindi. “I finally bought an air cooler for my bedroom—and it’s been a lifesaver. I can finally sleep again.”
Like many middle-class households, Saima says the ongoing heatwave left her with little choice. “I was hesitant at first, but it’s been worth every penny,” she added.
As the mercury continues to rise and the heatwave shows no sign of abating, air coolers are quickly becoming an essential summer fixture in homes across the twin cities—offering a much-needed respite from the punishing temperatures.
