Islamabad: Health expert Dr Ahmad Abdullah advised infants, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and patients with mental illness, heart disease, or high blood pressure to take precautions and consume homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and lassi to counter heatwave illnesses as scorching summer winds intensify across the country.

Talking to PTV news, Associate Professor of Public Health Dr Ahmad Abdullah emphasized the importance of taking precautions to avoid heat wave-related illnesses. “To combat heat stress, the health authorities have already advised people to remain vigilant and increase their water intake,” he added.

“The number of heat-related medical cases has been increasing recently,” he said. “To stay protected from heat-related illnesses, especially during the hottest months of the year, people must stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Drink even if you don’t feel thirsty,” he advised. “People must avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.”

Dr Ahmad highlighted the importance of recognizing the early symptoms of heat-related illnesses. He noted that people with outdoor jobs, young children, and elderly individuals with chronic medical conditions are more prone to heat-related health issues.

In response to a question, he mentioned that all deputy commissioners were instructed to establish heat stroke centers at public places to provide immediate medical assistance.

Dr Ahmad underscored the need for creating public awareness about heat stroke protection. He advised people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, especially between 12 noon and 4 pm, cover their heads, and increase water intake.

He also recommended keeping living spaces well-ventilated and using fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Additionally, he suggested closing curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day to block out direct sunlight.
