News Desk

Islamabad: Hasan Nawaz made a dream one-day international (ODI) debut on Friday, scoring an unbeaten 63 to guide Pakistan to a five-wicket win over the West Indies in the opening match of their three-game series.

Chasing 281 for victory in the day-night fixture, Pakistan were in trouble at 180 for five when Nawaz joined Hussain Talat at the crease.

The pair put on an unbroken 104-run stand for the sixth wicket, steering the visitors home with seven balls to spare. Talat finished unbeaten on 41 off 37 balls, striking one six and four fours.

Mohammad Rizwan contributed 53 before being trapped lbw by Shamar Joseph in the 38th over, leaving Pakistan still 101 runs adrift.

Nawaz then took charge, hitting three sixes and five fours in his 54-ball knock, sealing the win with a boundary off Joseph’s final delivery in the 49th over.

Evin Lewis top-scored for the hosts with 60 off 62 balls, including three sixes and five fours, while captain Shai Hope made 55 and Roston Chase added 53.

West Indies were all out for 280, with Naseem Shah cleaning up the tail by taking the final three wickets — including two in consecutive deliveries.
