Harris’ Popularity Jumps Following Biden Withdrawal

News York: US Vice President Kamala Harris has seen a notable increase in her favorability rating following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race and his endorsement of her.

According to a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll, Harris’ favorability rating has risen to 43 percent, up from 35 percent a week prior. Her unfavorability rating has decreased to 42 percent from 46 percent.

Biden’s announcement on July 20 that he would end his reelection campaign, combined with endorsements from prominent Democrats including former President Barack Obama, has bolstered Harris’ standing.

She has already secured enough delegate commitments to be considered the presumptive Democratic nominee, provided these delegates honor their commitments at the convention.

Currently, there are no indications of other Democrats challenging Harris for the nomination. The poll reveals that 52 percent  of Americans believe she should be the Democratic nominee, a figure that rises to 86 percent  among Democrats.

Among independents, 51 percent support her, while only 20 percent of Republicans do.

In terms of enthusiasm, 48 percent of Americans express excitement about Harris as the Democratic nominee, compared to 39 percent for former President Donald Trump as the Republican nominee.

Enthusiasm for Harris is particularly high among Democrats (88%) and Black Americans (70%), whereas Trump garners enthusiasm from only 31 percent of independents.

Trump’s favorability rating has dropped slightly from 40 percent in the week following the attempted assassination and the Republican National Convention, to 36 percent in the latest poll. His favorability among independents also decreased, falling from 35 percent to 27 percent.

Political observers are noting the impact of “double haters”—Americans who disapprove of both Biden and Trump. The proportion of such individuals has decreased from 15 percent to 7 percent  following Harris’ increased favorability.

Turnout will be a critical factor in the upcoming election. Compared to an earlier ABC News/Washington Post poll, the number of Democrats who are certain to vote has risen from 70 percent to 76 percent matching the 78 percent of Republicans who are also certain to vote.
