Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday forecast hailstorms and thunderstorms in parts of Balochistan, lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern Punjab, as a cold wave continues to grip much of the country.

In its latest advisory, the Met Office predicted partly cloudy skies with isolated rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms in several districts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Chaman, Zhob, Ziarat, Kalat, Khuzdar and Gwadar. Hailstorms may also occur at a few locations.

Lower districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — including Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Karak, Lakki Marwat and adjoining areas — are expected to receive isolated rain and thunderstorms, while upper districts will remain very cold and dry.

In Punjab, most districts are likely to experience cold and dry weather. However, southern and central parts — including Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakkar, Layyah and Sahiwal — may witness isolated rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunder.

The federal capital, Islamabad, is expected to remain cold and dry with partly cloudy skies.

Weather in Sindh will largely stay dry, though isolated thunderstorms are forecast in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Dadu and nearby areas.

Meanwhile, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are expected to remain cold and partly cloudy, with chances of isolated rain and thunderstorms in some areas of Kashmir.

Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather prevailed across most parts of the country, while northern Balochistan received light rain. Quetta recorded up to six millimetres of rainfall.

The lowest minimum temperatures recorded were minus seven degrees Celsius in Leh, minus four in Astore and minus three in Skardu. Daytime highs in major cities — including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Multan — are expected to hover around 28°C, while Quetta may see a maximum of 18°C.

The PMD has advised citizens to remain cautious in areas likely to experience thunderstorms, hail and strong winds, urging travellers and farmers in vulnerable districts to take necessary precautions.
