Guinness World Records Honors Giant Matchbox Eiffel Tower

Islamabad: Guinness World Records has officially recognized the world’s largest Eiffel Tower model constructed from matchboxes, overturning a previous disqualification on technical grounds.

French citizen Richard Ploude is credited with crafting this monumental model, standing at an impressive height of 7.19 meters.

The meticulous creation process spanned eight years, during which Ploude utilized 700,000 matchsticks to bring the intricate Eiffel Tower model to life.

Initially, they employed commercially available matchsticks, but due to the time-consuming process of removing the reddish sulfur ends, they approached the manufacturer for plain matchsticks.

Completed on December 27 of the previous year, Richard Plod reached out to Guinness World Records to claim the official record. However, his submission was rejected, asserting that it was not feasible to construct it using commercially available matchsticks.

Subsequently, Guinness World Records reconsidered its position, with representative Mark McNally stating in a released statement, “We are very pleased to acknowledge Richard Plod’s project. Our initial comments about the project were somewhat stringent.” The statement further expressed admiration for the truly remarkable nature of Richard Plod’s undertaking.

Looking ahead, Richard Plod aspires to exhibit his project in Paris for the Olympics scheduled in July. It’s worth noting that the previous record for the tallest matchstick Eiffel Tower was held by Toufik Dahr from Lebanon, who erected a 6.53-meter tower in 2009.
