Google Proposes Chromebook Manufacturing Plant in Punjab

Lahore: Tech giant Google has offered to establish a factory for the local production of Google Chromebooks in Punjab, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz assuring full government support for the initiative.

A high-level delegation from Google for Education and Tech Valley met with the Chief Minister in Lahore to present the proposal. The delegation was led by Kevin Callis, Global Director of Google for Education, while Omar Farooq, Chief Information Officer of Tech Valley, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Google representatives formally submitted their proposal for setting up a Chromebook manufacturing facility in the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz welcomed the initiative and assured the delegation of the Punjab government’s complete administrative and technical support, terming the project a milestone toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy.

The discussion also focused on enhancing digital education in government schools and integrating AI tools into learning systems across Punjab.

Google representatives shared that the upcoming Chromebooks would feature three pre-installed educational applications — Gemini, Read Along, and Canva — to assist students in learning and creativity.

They further informed that Google for Education has already trained over 2,000 government teachers in digital tools, with additional training programs currently underway.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reiterated her government’s commitment to making IT a central component of education and establishing Punjab as a hub for artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

“The government will fully facilitate the establishment of the Chromebook factory to boost local educational technology production and create new opportunities for youth,” she said.
