Islamabad: Google has announced what it calls the largest update to Google Maps in more than a decade, introducing powerful artificial intelligence and immersive 3D navigation features that could significantly change how users interact with the app.

The update centers on two major additions — Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation, both designed to make navigation more intuitive and personalized.

AI-Powered ‘Ask Maps’

The new Ask Maps feature integrates Google’s advanced Gemini models into the app, allowing users to ask travel and destination questions in a conversational manner.

Instead of typing simple searches, users can ask detailed queries such as where to charge a phone without waiting in a crowded café, and the app will suggest nearby places that match those needs.

Ask Maps can also analyze travel plans. Users can upload a list of places they intend to visit and ask the system to recommend nearby attractions or experiences.

According to Google, the feature draws on information from more than 300 million locations, including reviews contributed by over 500 million community members, to generate tailored suggestions.

The AI tool will also take users’ past preferences into account, such as favorite restaurant types, when recommending destinations or businesses.

Once a place is selected, Ask Maps can assist with making restaurant reservations, saving locations to lists, or sharing recommendations with friends.

Immersive 3D Navigation

Alongside the AI assistant, Google has introduced Immersive Navigation, a redesigned navigation system that provides a 3D view of routes and surroundings.

The feature aims to replicate real-world driving environments more closely by highlighting lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs, while surrounding buildings, terrain, and overpasses appear more realistic.

Google described the feature as “a complete transformation of the navigation experience”, offering clearer visuals and more intuitive directions.

Additional New Features

The update also brings several smaller improvements to the app, including:

  • More advanced route notifications
  • More natural and conversational voice navigation
  • Parking suggestions when approaching destinations
  • Real-time alerts about road disruptions
  • Added context when choosing between alternative routes

Rollout

Google said Ask Maps is rolling out immediately in the United States on both iOS and Android, with a desktop version expected later this year.

Immersive Navigation will also begin rolling out in the U.S. and expand in the coming months to supported iOS and Android devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google’s built-in systems.

The update signals Google’s push to combine AI-driven recommendations with highly realistic navigation, potentially redefining how millions of users explore cities and plan journeys through Google Maps.
