Global Power Legacy Haunts Kurram’s Ordinary Citizens

Peshawar: The plight of the residents of Parachinar, district Kurram, has reached critical levels. For the past two months, the city has been completely cut off from the rest of the country, subjecting its inhabitants to unimaginable hardships.
The harsh winter temperatures, plunging to as low as -3°C, have been compounded by severe shortages of basic necessities such as LPG cylinders and fuel for heating.
Kurram district has long been plagued by a legacy of sectarian tensions and tribal disputes, particularly over land. These issues date back to the Afghan Jihad era, during which global powers heavily influenced the region, leaving behind not only ideological divides but also vast quantities of unregulated weapons.
Over the years, these weapons have fueled violent clashes between Shia and Sunni communities, and recurring disputes over land ownership have exacerbated tensions.
The most recent outbreak of violence stems from a land dispute between local tribes, which has escalated into full-scale clashes. This year alone, over 200 people have been killed and more than 250 injured, further destabilizing the already fragile region.
These disputes, deeply rooted in historical grievances and resource competition, have turned the district into a conflict zone.

The blockade has created a dire scarcity of essential commodities. Markets are devoid of basic items such as flour, sugar, ghee, medicines, milk, baby formula, lentils, vegetables, fruits, and even salt, which reportedly ran out yesterday (Thursday). Fuel supplies, including petrol and diesel, are almost nonexistent, leaving the region paralyzed.
The economic impact is equally devastating. Business activities have ground to a halt, and banks are unable to provide funds, delaying salaries and pensions. Even individuals with access to bank accounts struggle to withdraw their own money.
The healthcare system is on the brink of collapse; hospital supplies such as syringes are now being delivered by helicopters arranged by the provincial government. Chronic patients with heart conditions and diabetes are suffering immensely due to the unavailability of essential medicines.
The closure of the Afghan border has exacerbated the situation, halting the import of fruits and other commodities. Bakeries have shut down, further compounding the misery for families who rely on market-bought bread and flour.
The crisis has also taken a toll on children’s education. Schools remain closed, and many students have missed crucial exams due to the prevailing conditions, robbing them of opportunities for a brighter future.
Governor KP, Faisal Kareem Khan, speaking at a religious harmony conference in Peshawar, highlighted the broader issues affecting the region. He attributed much of the current instability to the legacy of global powers leaving behind weapons in Afghanistan, which later infiltrated the tribal areas, including Kurram.

The Governor also acknowledged the role of unresolved land disputes in fueling local conflicts and assured the public that the government has a plan to address these issues and restore peace. He emphasized that no one would be allowed to incite sectarian or tribal conflict in the region.
Similarly, Akbar Khan, Vice Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, voiced his concerns over the large-scale human rights violations in Kurram.
He urged the government to reopen the roads and ensure the secure movement of people and supplies. Speaking to this correspondent, he emphasized the urgent need for decisive government action to deliver essential commodities and alleviate the suffering of the population.
The current situation in Parachinar demands immediate and sustained attention from the local administration, provincial and the federal government.
Addressing the root causes of the sectarian and tribal conflicts, particularly the longstanding land disputes, is crucial to restoring peace and stability in the region. Timely action is necessary to prevent further escalation and to ensure that residents can resume their daily lives with dignity.
Continued delays in addressing these issues may compel the public to resort to protests, further worsening the already precarious situation. It is imperative that the authorities take swift and effective measures to end the suffering in Kurram and pave the way for long-term peace and prosperity.
