Islamabad: International football player Christian Atsu is discovered alive after being buried under debris during the earthquake that struck Turkey, stated Hatayspor (football club) Vice President Mustafa Ozat.

Following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday that destroyed hundreds of structures and killed almost 5,000 people in numerous Turkish and Syrian cities, Ghanaian winger Atsu was reported missing in Turkey’s Hatay region.

“Christian Atsu was pulled out injured and is in stable condition at a local hospital. Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under rubble,” informed the club vice president.

Atsu, 31, played for Newcastle United and Everton in the Premier League before joining Hatayspor in September. Although he was last chosen to represent Ghana in 2019, he has not yet declared his international football career over.Prior to that, he had represented prestigious English teams, including Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle.

Ozat informed that numerous players and officials had been extricated from the wreckage.

Second-tier Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor apprised that goalkeeper Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan had died in the earthquake.

Following Monday’s earthquakes that shook the region, more than 5,000 fatalities and over 21,000 injuries have been officially reported in Turkey and Syria. Ten provinces in Turkey, including Hatay, the home of Atsu’s football team, Hatayspor, claimed casualties.
