From memes to magic: Pakistan triumph in Dubai

Dubai: Pakistan’s dramatic win over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 encounter had a touch of both comedy and class—an almost farcical fielding lapse followed by a match-winning spell from Shaheen Shah Afridi that sealed Pakistan’s place in the final.

Defending a modest total of 136, Pakistan nearly gifted Bangladesh a lifeline when a golden run-out chance was squandered in the fifth over.

After a sharp stop at backward point by Saim Ayub, both Bangladeshi batters ended up stranded on the same end of the pitch. But with no fielder at the bowler’s end to collect Saim’s throw, the opportunity slipped away, leaving fans and teammates stunned.

The moment, which instantly went viral on social media, had echoes of Pakistan’s long-standing reputation for “brain-fade” episodes on the field. Memes poured in, mocking the missed chance that could have proved costly in such a low-scoring contest.

Yet Pakistan redeemed themselves with disciplined bowling, led by Shaheen Afridi’s fiery spell of 3 for 17 in four overs. His early breakthroughs dismantled Bangladesh’s chase, restricting them to 124/9 in 20 overs. Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf provided crucial support, ensuring Pakistan defended the lowest-ever total (135) by a full-member side in T20Is at Dubai—beating New Zealand’s previous record of 144 against Pakistan in 2018.

Speaking after the win, Shaheen credited his success to preparation and family support. “I will dedicate this award to my beautiful wife and son who are here. You need early breakthroughs. Those three overs made the difference in the powerplay. I was working on the slower ball. It came out well in the main time,” he said.

Despite the comic error in the field, the victory showcased Pakistan’s ability to bounce back under pressure—a reminder of their unpredictability, equal parts frustration and brilliance.
