Lahore: In a fervent plea to bolster Pakistan’s carpet exports, the Chairman of the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA), Mian Atiqur Rehman, stressed the necessity for government intervention to overcome obstacles hindering industry growth.

Speaking at a review meeting, Rehman outlined the vision for a thriving carpet sector that could elevate Pakistan’s status in the global market.

“To enhance exports, we must remove unnecessary barriers and receive robust support from the government,” he stated, advocating for the establishment of carpet production centers in rural areas to empower skilled artisans and create job opportunities right at their doorstep.

With plans for the 41st International Exhibition in 2025, Rehman called for innovative proposals to align production with modern trends.

“Our handmade carpets are a symbol of our heritage, but we are not producing at our potential,” he acknowledged.

PCMEA leaders echoed his sentiments, urging collaboration across various sectors to unify efforts towards boosting exports.

Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmed highlighted pressing issues at the Torkham Border and within regulatory bodies that need addressing for the industry to flourish.

As the carpet industry faces challenges, the call for strategic government support resonates louder than ever, with hopes that a united front will revive this traditional craft and enhance its contributions to the economy.
