Los Angeles: In a dramatic opening to the World Series, Freddie Freeman delivered a sensational walk-off grand slam, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-3 comeback victory against the New York Yankees at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.
Freeman, who returned to the lineup after a lingering ankle injury, launched a stunning 423-foot home run with two outs in the 10th inning, securing the win in a moment that felt straight out of Hollywood.
The Yankees had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th when Jazz Chisholm crossed home plate, putting the Dodgers on the brink of defeat.
With the bases loaded following an intentional walk to Mookie Betts, Freeman faced Yankees reliever Nestor Cortes, who delivered a 92 mph fastball. Freeman connected perfectly, sending the ball soaring into right field and igniting a euphoric celebration.
“That’s a dream come true,” Freeman remarked after his historic hit—the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. “But it’s only one; we’ve got three more.”
The 35-year-old former MVP had struggled throughout the postseason but found his moment of glory when it mattered most, cementing his place in World Series folklore.
As he rounded the bases, Freeman described feeling almost as if he were having an out-of-body experience, overwhelmed by the cheers of “Freddie, Freddie” from the sold-out crowd. Game two of the best-of-seven series is set to take place on Saturday.
