Freedom Of Expression Is Driver Of All Rights: DigiMAP
News Desk
Islamabad: The Digital Media Alliance of Pakistan (DigiMAP) salutes the selfless work and response to the call of duty by the journalists, whether they are working at legacy or contemporary digital media platforms, remarked DigiMAP members on World Press Freedom Day.
In a country like Pakistan where journalists’ safety perennially remains on the radar, this year’s DigiMAP fully endorses and stands for this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme set by UNESCO: ‘Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights.’
Challenges in the way to work are manifold, but the resilience, resolve, and character shown by the journalists in one of the most unsafe, laden with legal, consequential landmines of vague and open-ended provisions, socially harassing, financially mouth-gasping circumstances, the journalist fraternity is consuming their best professional selves in response to their belief that a journalist stands for the public good and for the people.
“We, the people and professionals at DigiMAP, believe it is worth telling the public as a public good whatever makes the powerful, presuming to be unaccountable, uncomfortable,” said alliance members.
They further stated that these powerfuls are not necessarily public office holders, officials, or corporations, but also the ones who, in the smugness of their large numbers, are believers in majoritarianism, bulldozing the minorities, and minoritizing fellow humans and communities through forceful legal or constitutional weapons.
“This is possible only by celebrating, embracing, firmly believing, and working with a sure mindset that freedom of expression is a driver of all other rights, as put in the letters of this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme,” they remarked.
