Four Held from Banned Outfit in Journalist Imtiaz Mir Murder Case

Karachi:The Sindh government on Monday announced the arrest of four suspects linked to a banned organization in connection with the killing of journalist and television anchorperson Imtiaz Mir.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon, and Additional IGP Karachi Javed Alam Odho shared details of the development during a joint press conference held in Karachi.

Mir, who was associated with a private news channel, was shot dead last month when six armed assailants on two motorcycles opened fire on his car near the National Highway. He sustained multiple bullet wounds and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

According to the home minister, a joint operation by Karachi Police and a federal intelligence agency led to the arrest of four suspects — Ajlal Zaidi, Shabab, Ahsan, and Faraz. The men were allegedly members of a proscribed outfit receiving instructions from abroad. The motorcycle used in the attack was also recovered.

Terming the arrests a major breakthrough, Lanjar said initial investigations suggested the motive behind the killing was an interview Mir had recently conducted that was perceived as being “in favour of Israel.” The suspects were believed to be affiliated with Lashkar Saarullah, he added, noting that the prime suspect was thought to be residing in a neighbouring country.

IGP Memon confirmed that forensic tests had matched the shell casings found at the scene with the weapons recovered from the arrested men, further establishing their involvement. He lauded the police team’s swift action and announced commendations and rewards for the officers involved in the investigation.

Police also recovered four 9mm pistols and two motorcycles used in the attack.
