Floodwaters Recede in Bangladesh, But 300,000 Still in Shelters

Islamabad: Floodwaters in low-lying Bangladesh are beginning to recede after days of devastating floods, but around 300,000 people remain in emergency shelters, according to disaster officials on Sunday.
The severe flooding, which has claimed at least 18 lives, presents a significant challenge for the new government that assumed office this month following a student-led revolution.
Rescue teams, including the army, air force, and navy, are working to assist those displaced and deliver aid to those who have lost everything, said Disaster Management Minister Faruk-e-Azam.
“The situation is improving as the waters start to recede,” Azam told AFP. According to the ministry, over 307,000 people are currently in shelters and more than 5.2 million have been affected by the floods.
Efforts are underway to restore communication in the affected areas to facilitate the distribution of relief supplies, and measures are being taken to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
Additionally, local residents have been actively fundraising to support relief efforts.
