Floods In Pakistan Have Left 6m With Severe Food Insecurity: WB
News Desk
Islamabad: At least six million people are suffering from acute food insecurity across Pakistan after the disastrous floods, according to the World Food Programme (WFP).
A recent Food Security report issued by the World Bank stated that between June and August 2022, floods in Pakistan’s most food-insecure provinces, Balochistan and Sindh, killed more than 11 million of livestock and devastated more than 9.4 million acres of crops.
The food inflation in country has also increased significantly, which rose from 15.3 per cent in March 2022 to 31.7 per cent in September 2022. The year-on-year consumer price inflation for food prices was 35.5 per cent in December 2022.
The South Asia region experiences a high frequency of climatological shocks, dwindling foreign exchange reserves, and depreciating local currencies, which all contribute to significant food inflation and decrease in the affordability of healthful food.
