Flash Flood, Landslide Risk in AJK, GB Tonight
News Desk
Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a precautionary alert for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), warning of possible flash floods and landslides triggered by thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected Saturday night.
According to the NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Center, a weather system entering northern Pakistan from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is expected to interact with a westerly disturbance. This interaction could result in heavy downpours, strong winds, and thunderstorms across Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
The severe weather is forecast to impact various districts, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Kohat, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, and surrounding areas, from Saturday evening into the night.
The NDMA has warned that strong winds and dust storms may cause damage to buildings, vehicles, rooftops, and power infrastructure. Uprooted trees, reduced visibility, and road obstructions could also lead to short-term power outages and increased risk of accidents.
Residents are strongly advised to:
Avoid standing near trees, billboards, and other loose structures during the storm.
Park vehicles in safe, covered areas.
Limit unnecessary travel.
Monitor weather updates through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App.
Heavy rainfall could lead to a sudden rise in water levels, increasing the risk of river and stream flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Mountain roads may also face closures or traffic delays due to landslides.
The NDMA has urged local authorities and the public to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect lives and property as the severe weather system unfolds.
