Fishing Plays Vital Role In Pakistan’s Agricultural Economy: Javed

Quetta: Secretary Fisheries and Coastal Development Balochistan Javed Anwar Shahwani said that fishing plays vital role in Pakistan’s agricultural economy.

He said that there is a lot of potential for the growth and development of sustainable aquaculture in Balochistan, saying that the province is rich in water resources.

He expressed these views while visiting the Balochistan Fishermen Marine Cooperative Society Office and Fish Hatchery in Hub District.

While talking to the Fishermen Cooperative Society, Javed Anwar Shahwani said that the fresh water of Hub Dam could be helpful in promoting the fish hatchery industry.

He said that the Hub Dam and other water bodies could be fully utilized, the Fisheries Department is paying special attention to the functioning and promotion of fish farming in the fish hatchery adjacent to the Hub Dam since the day of his appointment.

The Secretary Fisheries also met with the officials of the Fishermen Marine Cooperative Society Office, Hub District.

Chairman Fishermen Cooperative Society Mir Ali Akbar Zeri and Deputy Director Fisheries Marine Saif-ur-Rehman and Assistant Director Abdul Raziq Angaria briefed the Secretary Fisheries and Coastal Development and praising the success of the Foreign Special Program and the services to the department.

On this occasion, the Secretary Fisheries said that the fish industry and fishermen of Balochistan are far behind the global standards, that is why a program has been started to train fishermen in modern technology in Korea.

He said that plans are being made to provide sustainable livelihoods in the areas most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

The Secretary said that the Fisheries Department intends to start a pilot scheme of fish farming in the initial phase. PC-1 of Dam Fish Hatchery Project is being revised.

Chairman Fishermen Cooperative Society Mir Ali Akbar Zehri told the Secretary Fisheries that there is a strong network of natural fisheries in the villages adjacent to the coastal belt.

He said that the land of the coastal belt of Balochistan is very fertile for fish and shrimp farming, especially the coastal belt is very suitable for fish farming and the coastal belt of Balochistan also plays an important role in the country’s marine catch.

The secretary was also briefed regarding the progress of the department by concerned officials.
