Fisherman Rescues Endangered Sea Turtle in Jiwani
News Desk
Islamabad: On Friday, local fisherman Mr. Akbar Baloch rescued and safely released an endangered sea turtle that had become entangled in his fishing nets. This marks the second such rescue by Mr. Baloch in just this quarter.
He had previously shared a video in January 2025 showcasing his efforts to save green turtles while fishing in the Daran and Ganz areas of Jiwani.
His actions have been widely praised by Cetacean conservationists, who emphasize the critical need to protect sea turtle populations that face various threats, including habitat loss and accidental capture. Conservationists have urged national and local authorities to encourage more fishermen to engage in efforts to safeguard marine biodiversity.
In the recent past, the WWF has been actively involved in raising awareness in the Jiwani area about the importance of sea turtles. Sudheer Baloch, a local marine expert and M.Phil. student at Ocean University in China, has been a key figure in this initiative.
In an interview with pen.pk, Sudheer shared that after conducting awareness sessions with local fishermen, positive results are now emerging, with more fishermen rescuing and releasing sea turtles back into the water.
Mr. Baloch’s continued efforts demonstrate the growing involvement of local communities in marine conservation, offering hope for the future protection of endangered species like sea turtles.
