First Lady Samina Alvi Calls for Inclusive Society

Islamabad: First Lady Begum Samina Alvi emphasized the pivotal role of women’s empowerment in fostering a progressive and inclusive society during an event organized by the Behbud Association of Pakistan in honor of International Women’s Day.

She stressed that empowering women across all sectors of life was essential for societal advancement.

Alvi highlighted the collective responsibility to create a conducive environment for girls and women, ensuring they receive proper education and training to lead lives with dignity and respect.

Commending the Behbud Association for its efforts, she noted that the organization had empowered approximately one million women through skills training since its establishment.

Recognizing that women constitute half of the country’s population, Alvi underscored their crucial role in driving economic development.

She lamented the significantly lower literacy rate among women compared to men in Pakistan and emphasized the need for improvement, citing the country’s low ranking in the Global Gender Gap Index.

Alvi stressed that enhancing women’s literacy would not only contribute to the overall literacy rate but also prevent intergenerational illiteracy, as educated women prioritize their children’s education.

She emphasized the importance of raising awareness about breast cancer and advocated for regular self-examination, highlighting its role in early detection and cure.

Similarly, there was a call for raising awareness about mental health, emphasizing its significance in preventing mental stress and maintaining overall well-being.

The business community, in particular, was urged to support the establishment of vocational training centers for differently abled individuals, enabling them to become self-sufficient contributors to the nation’s progress.

During the event, the first lady presented shields to the association’s staff. Lt General Dr Nigar Johar highlighted the pivotal role of the Behbud Association in empowering women, stressing the importance of providing equal opportunities for women as taught by Islam.

Abida Malik, President of the Behbud Association of Pakistan, mentioned the ongoing construction of a 100-bed hospital affiliated with the association, expected to be completed within a year.

She also commended Samina Alvi for her significant efforts in raising awareness about breast cancer and other health and social issues.
