Islamabad: As the countdown to Christmas begins, the Christian community in the federal capital, echoing sentiments across the country, is embracing the festive spirit by adorning the cherished Christmas tree—a symbol that heralds the arrival of Santa Claus and embodies the essence of joyous celebrations.

This evergreen coniferous tree, whether real or artificial, serves as the focal point of Christmas jubilations, bedecked with an array of colorful ornaments. Adornments ranging from baubles, golden or silver bells, stars of various sizes, pine cones, apples, candies, tinsel, to glass, metal, wood, and ceramic balloons, transform the tree into a captivating spectacle. Topped with an angel or star, symbolizing the heavenly host, the tree becomes a radiant centerpiece for families like Asiya Yusuf’s, drawing friends and loved ones to witness its vibrant splendor.

“For us, decorating the Christmas tree is an integral part of the festivities; it embodies the spirit of our celebration,” remarked Asiya Yusuf, expressing the sentiment shared among many. Amir Masih highlighted his children’s eagerness to share their adorned tree on social media, capturing the enchanting moment and spreading the joy.

Amidst the festivities, the festival also brings prosperity to sweet sellers, gift shops, and ornament vendors, providing a boost to their businesses. Ali Nawaz, a seller of decorative items, noted the demand for colorful candles and fairy lights used for embellishing trees, foreseeing a flourishing market for these festive adornments.

Rooted in tradition, the practice of decorating Christmas trees dates back to the 15th century in Livonia, resonating with the Christian community’s excitement and fervor as they prepare for the upcoming celebrations, embracing the spirit of the season symbolized by church bells heralding the birth of Jesus.

Across generations, Christmas becomes a time of shared affection, expressed through exchanging gifts, singing hymns, and gathering with loved ones.
