Islamabad: Two suspects allegedly involved in the Fatima Jinnah (F-9) Park gang-rape incident were shot and killed by the Islamabad Police at a police picket close to Sector D-12, said police sources on Thursday.

To apprehend the culprits connected to the incident at F-9 Park, the whole Islamabad Police was placed on alert. At the checkpoints, the police were told to perform in-depth inspections. Even ambulances and fire fighting units were not spared during the search operation, according to the Islamabad Police chief.

According to police sources, two bike-riding suspects showed up at a police station on the major road in Sector D-12 during the operation. “When they were signalled to stop, they attempted to speed away. On being intercepted by the police, the bike-riders opened fire at the cops deployed at the post,” informed Police spokesperson.

The police said the attackers were injured during the retaliatory fire, adding that the suspects were caught injured but later died when they were shifted to the PIMS hospital.

The police officials deputed at the check post remained safe due to strictly adopted precautions and vigilance, the statement added.

The suspects have been identified as Nawaz Khanand Iqbal Khan. Police said both were wanted to Taxila, Rawalpindi and Islamabad (Shalimar and Margallah) police stations in heinous crimes, including murder, robberies, mugging, rape and other offences.

It is important to note that the Islamabad police have set up special pickets in several locations as a result of recent terrorist attacks and to protect the safety of the populace.

In a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Dr Akbar Nasir Khan stated that the police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the rape event, and he told the committee that they won’t unless they have strong evidence.
