Islamabad: Health expert suggested people drink more water to stay hydrated in the intense heat.

Dr Khalid Awan said that heat exhaustion is the precursor to heat stroke which can become lethal if not treated within 30 minutes.

Awan further stated, “Heat exhaustion manifests as headaches, cramps in arms and legs, excessive sweating, dizziness, and confusion.” Symptoms are the same in children and adults, but children could also become sleepy, he added.

Expert suggested that sprinkling water on the clothes might also aid in dissipating the heat.

In order to promote perspiration and heat dissipation, light-coloured, loose clothing is preferable to tight, dark clothes in this climate, Dr Khalid recommended.

He said if someone was previously drinking 10-12 glasses of water and then doubles this amount, adding that drink water even if you are not thirsty; it will have a protective effect on the body.
