Excessive Smartphone Use Reduces Book Reading Habit

Islamabad: People, particularly students, are reading books, newspapers, theses, and other things online rather than on hard copies, which have a negative impact on book reading,” said Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur Assistant Professor Dr Sahib Khan while sharing his views on the negative implications of reading on smartphones.

Mobile phone use has significantly reduced the habit of reading books among writers, authors, intellectuals, poets, students, and other readers.

Dr Sahib Khan informed that the concept of book reading is rapidly dwindling among its devotees as people of all ages are preoccupied with sending messages, texts, and tweets via Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and other social networking apps. He said, “Read thousands of books then words will come into the reader’s mind like floods.”

Reading books helped people become more knowledgeable, provided them with plenty of information to compete in the world, and improved their ability to communicate with others using reason, evidence, and a strong imagination. When compared to reading books, reading study materials on cell phones resulted in users having less comprehension and understanding.

Poet Khalid Ahmed mentioned that the youth are not concentrating on their studies and exams, and are wasting their money and valuable time by utilising their mobile devices. He advised the kids to read massive books, novels, and beautiful rhymes that would educate them on the dynamic ways of talking and postures.

National Book Foundation Managing Director Dr Raja Mazhar Hameed apprised that the foundation offers authors who are writing for young readers, schoolchildren, college-bound students, or students at the university level a more hospitable, enhanced and supportive academic environment. He said, “Our moderate prices of textbooks and general books never impact our publishing.”

According to a book seller in Saddar Rawalpindi, “People are expressing less interest in buying books from vendors than in the past. ”Before the invention of mobile phones, he sold about 400 books over the course of a weekend, but now only about 40 volumes are being bought. A room without books is like a body without a soul, according to intellectuals who always regarded books as one of their friends when they were alone. APP
