Eurovision in Gaza’s Shadow as Israel Competes in Final
News Desk
Malm: The Eurovision Song Contest final kicks off in Malmo, Sweden, this Saturday amidst heightened tensions surrounding Israel’s involvement amid the Gaza conflict.
Israel, alongside Croatia and Switzerland, is among the frontrunners according to bookmakers, aiming to claim victory in the flamboyant competition watched by over a hundred million viewers.
Authorities anticipate up to 20,000 protesters gathering in Malmo to voice opposition to Israel’s participation. Malmo, home to over 360,000 people representing 186 nationalities, many from the Middle East, braces for the demonstration.
Meanwhile, the city expects around 100,000 fans from 90 nations, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s iconic Eurovision win with “Waterloo”.
Despite widespread calls for her exclusion from thousands of musicians worldwide, Israel’s contestant Eden Golan was confirmed to participate by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in March. Recently, nine contestants, including seven finalists, have appealed for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
