Epstein Scandal Sparks Rift Between Trump and Republican Base
News Desk
Islamabad: A perceived lack of transparency surrounding the U.S. government’s handling of investigations into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has created an unusual divide between former President Donald Trump and his otherwise loyal Republican supporters.
As Trump struggles to control the intensifying obsession with the case among his base—long fueled by conspiracy theories—AFP breaks down the scandal’s origins and explains the public outrage.
How the Epstein Case Began
Jeffrey Epstein, a wealthy financier, was first accused of sexual misconduct in 2006 when the parents of a 14-year-old girl reported to Florida police that he had abused their daughter at his residence.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Epstein avoided federal prosecution through a highly controversial plea deal. Instead of facing life in prison, he served just under 13 months in jail.
He was arrested again in New York in July 2019, this time on federal charges of trafficking underage girls and engaging in sex acts with them for money. Prosecutors accused him of working with staff and associates to maintain a “steady supply of minor victims.”
Epstein pleaded not guilty. But on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial, he was found dead in his jail cell. Authorities ruled it a suicide by hanging.
His longtime companion, Ghislaine Maxwell, was later convicted and sentenced in 2022 for her role in helping Epstein abuse girls. The case also drew attention to Epstein’s connections with high-profile figures, including Prince Andrew and former U.S. President Bill Clinton—both of whom have denied any wrongdoing.
Why Conspiracy Theories Persist
Many believe key details about Epstein’s case are being deliberately concealed to protect wealthy and powerful individuals in his social circle, including Trump.
These suspicions have taken hold within Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, although calls for full transparency have come from both sides of the political spectrum.
A central theory involves an alleged list of Epstein’s clients—supposedly containing names of individuals who participated in criminal activity with him. The Trump administration has maintained that no such list exists.
Sceptics have also pointed to irregularities surrounding Epstein’s death, including reported malfunctions in the security cameras near his cell that night, which many find suspicious.
Trump’s Role in the Controversy
As a former New York real estate mogul, Trump had previously socialized with Epstein. During his re-election campaign, he suggested he might release related documents. However, since returning to office, many of his supporters feel he hasn’t delivered on that promise.
Speculation intensified in June when Elon Musk, a former advisor, claimed in a now-deleted post on X that Trump was listed in Epstein’s files.
Efforts by Trump’s administration to respond to calls for full disclosure have largely disappointed the public. A document release in February revealed little new information. An 11-hour surveillance video from Epstein’s prison, meant to counter murder claims, lacked a critical minute of footage—only adding fuel to the fire.
A recent memo from the Justice Department and FBI concluded there wasn’t enough evidence in the files to warrant further investigation, prompting calls for the heads of both agencies to resign.
What Lies Ahead
Trump has tried to strike a careful balance—voicing support for releasing any “credible” Epstein-related documents, while simultaneously downplaying the case as “pretty boring stuff.”
Despite his efforts, the issue has sparked unrest even within his inner circle. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has gone against Trump’s stance, calling on the Justice Department to publicly release all related documents.
Democrats, meanwhile, have seized the opportunity to press Trump’s administration for full disclosure, hoping to highlight the divisions within the Republican Party over the Epstein saga.
