England thrash South Africa in World Cup opener

News Desk

Islamabad: England announced themselves as serious contenders for the Women’s World Cup with a crushing win over South Africa, dismissing them for just 70 runs and chasing the target in 14.1 overs to storm to the top of the points table.

The match, played in India, lasted only 34.5 overs—shorter than a full T20 game. England’s net run rate soared to 3.773, more than double that of second-placed Australia, giving them early pole position.

South Africa’s total was their lowest ever against England, their second-lowest at a World Cup, and third-lowest overall. Conditions offered little assistance to bowlers, but the Proteas collapsed against a disciplined England attack.

On debut, left-arm spinner Linsey Smith stunned South Africa’s top order, removing Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits, and Marizanne Kapp in her first ODI World Cup appearance.

Lauren Bell and Nat Sciver-Brunt joined the assault, reducing South Africa to 38 for 6 just outside the powerplay. Wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta was the only batter to reach double figures as the side was bundled out in 20.4 overs.

England were clinical in their chase. Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones batted patiently before accelerating after the powerplay.

Jones struck freely, clearing the infield and punishing wayward deliveries, while Beaumont anchored the innings. The pair’s unbeaten stand sealed a 10-wicket win, finishing with a boundary from Beaumont.

For South Africa, questions will be raised about selection decisions, particularly the omission of centurion Annerie Dercksen, while concerns linger over poor footwork and shot selection from senior batters.

England, coached by Charlotte Edwards—who played in a similar thrashing of South Africa in 2013—look a formidable force once again, while South Africa must regroup quickly to keep their campaign alive.
