Málaga, Spain: Tennis legend Rafael Nadal is set to make an emotional farewell at the Davis Cup in Málaga next week, hoping to end his illustrious career with a title for Spain.
At 38, Nadal has struggled with injuries, playing just four matches in 2023. While he led Spain to victory in 2019, the veteran has admitted his role this time may be limited to doubles matches. “If I don’t feel ready for singles, I’ll be the first to step aside,” he said, emphasizing that his participation will depend on his fitness during training.
Carlos Alcaraz, Spain’s leading player and ranked third in the world, expressed his admiration for Nadal, calling the event “really emotional and a special tournament.” Alcaraz, who partnered with Nadal in doubles at the Paris Olympics, said he wants Nadal to retire on a high note.
Nadal’s career boasts 22 Grand Slam titles, including 14 French Open victories. However, injuries have seen his ranking drop to 155, and he hasn’t won a title since his 2022 French Open triumph.
Spain faces the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, with potential semi-final matches against Germany or Canada. Fans, including sports icons like Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, are expected to witness Nadal’s farewell.
As Spain eyes a final showdown against defending champions Italy, Alcaraz said the recent floods in Valencia have fueled his determination to bring home the trophy. “Playing for Spain is the biggest thing for me,” he said.
Nadal’s storied career includes Olympic singles gold in 2008 and doubles gold in 2016, and fans hope his final match will be a fitting farewell for one of tennis’s all-time greats.
