Dry, Cold Weather Forecast for Lahore
News Desk
Lahore: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted predominantly dry and cold weather in Lahore and other districts of Punjab, with smog likely to persist in plain areas of the province.
According to the PMD, continental air continues to prevail over most parts of Pakistan, maintaining dry conditions. However, the recent wet spell in the region helped reduce smog intensity by washing away hazardous pollutants from the atmosphere.
Rain Likely in Two Days
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted on Sunday that the wind direction would remain north-west during the next two days, and rain was also expected during the next 48 hours.
The PMD release said continental air was prevailing over most parts of the country, while the smog/shallow fog was likely to prevail at isolated plain areas of Punjab during the night and morning hours.
Sunday’s lowest temperature was recorded at Leh, where mercury dropped to -7°C, while in Lahore, it was recorded at 13.8°C, and maximum 24.3°C.
Fog Expected in Sindh
The PMD has forecast dry weather across most districts of Sindh during the next 24 hours, with fog likely in Kashmore, Sukkur, Larkana, and surrounding areas during the early morning and night.
The province is expected to experience mainly dry conditions, according to meteorological experts.
Smog Eases in Punjab as Sunshine Returns
Punjab witnessed a slight reduction in smog intensity, with air quality improving in Lahore and several other districts following rainfall in parts of the province. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore, the most polluted city in Pakistan, saw a noticeable decline, though Delhi remains the most polluted city globally with an AQI of 559.
Chief Meteorologist Alim Al Hasan stated that northwesterly winds have contributed to reducing smog. He predicted sunny days and cold nights ahead.
In response to smog-related concerns, Punjab Police, under the instructions of Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar, intensified efforts to combat environmental violations. Over the last 24 hours, 49 cases were registered, and 18 individuals were arrested during a crackdown across various districts, including Lahore.
Authorities imposed fines exceeding Rs 1.2 million on 641 violators, issued 151 warnings, and took action against 9 incidents of crop residue burning, 556 cases of vehicular emissions, 37 brick kilns, 3 industrial facilities, and 5 other locations.
The Environmental Protection Department has urged citizens to adopt precautionary measures to minimize exposure to smog and contribute to reducing pollution levels.
