Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Saturday said Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian’s ongoing visit to Pakistan would further strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two brotherly nations, with a special focus on enhancing trade and investment cooperation.

Speaking to the media alongside Islamabad’s Chief Commissioner and Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa after reviewing reception arrangements, the minister said the nation warmly welcomed the Iranian President and his high-level delegation.

“The entire route from the airport has been adorned with Pakistani and Iranian flags, while portraits of both countries’ leadership are displayed across the capital to create a festive atmosphere,” said Tarar.

President Pezeshkian is in Pakistan on a two-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He arrived earlier in Lahore, where he was received by PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

During his brief stay in the provincial capital, the Iranian President visited the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, laid a floral wreath, and offered fateha, before proceeding to Islamabad.

According to the Foreign Office, the Iranian leader is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, senior ministers, and top officials.

During his stay, Dr Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Senate Chairman, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The visit, the FO said, is aimed at boosting cooperation in political, economic, and cultural spheres.

Tarar termed the visit “crucial,” adding that it follows the recent meeting between Prime Minister Sharif and President Pezeshkian in Azerbaijan and builds on the momentum created by the Prime Minister’s earlier visit to Iran, which was also attended by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

He recalled that during the visit of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, several trade-related initiatives were discussed. Saturday’s visit, he said, is expected to carry those discussions forward, particularly in the areas of joint border markets and enhancing bilateral trade volume.

“This visit holds immense importance in advancing Pakistan-Iran relations, particularly in the domains of trade and investment,” Tarar emphasized.
