Dispelling Myths, Understanding Realities on Autism
News Desk
Islamabad: Chief Autism Consultant at the Center of Autism Rehabilitation and Training Sindh (C-ARTs), Dr Iram Rizwan, emphasized that autism is often misconstrued as a disease, whereas it is actually a mental condition that presents uniquely in children.
During a recent interview with a private news channel, Dr Iram elucidated the common symptoms associated with autism, including challenges in attention, communication difficulties, and impaired social interaction.
She highlighted the variability in the severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children, noting that while some display more overt symptoms, even mild cases demand attention due to their potential impact on a child’s temperament and behavior.
Dr Iram underscored the significance of early intervention and timely consultation with healthcare professionals to kickstart the rehabilitation process.
Discussing the establishment of the Center of Autism Rehabilitation and Training Sindh (C-ARTs) in 2018 at the Center of Autism Rehabilitation and Training Institute within the Government of Sindh’s Special Education and Rehabilitation Complex, Dr Iram noted that the center offers tailored educational and rehabilitation programs, catering to children, adolescents, and young adults, all free of charge.
In Karachi, three centers serve different age groups, with plans for expansion across Sindh.
She outlined the rehabilitation journey, which commences with diagnosis and progresses through speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioral therapy. Additionally, educational programs are designed to equip autistic children with essential skills as they mature.
