Rawalpindi: Doesn’t matter if it is chilly outside or a hot and humid summer, the residents of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi always welcome different food varieties.
The recent increase in demand for Tawa Ice Cream Roll in twin cities, despite the fall of mercury, is one such example of the residents’ love for their favourite food flavour.
Yes! The cream lovers are still enjoying tasty and colourful Tawa Ice Cream Rolls in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, stating that ice cream mania can’t be put aside due to the weather.
Tawa ice cream roll is a popular street food in Rawalpindi. It is popular not only among residents of the twin cities but also throughout Pakistan. It is available in different areas of the garrison city, including Commercial Market and Saddar Market.
Tawa ice cream is prepared on a locally manufactured machine that works by installing a metal sheet over a cooling compressor, said Ashfaq Hussain, an ice cream owner.
Hussain said, “The compressor of the refrigerator and air conditioner is used for preparing the ice cream, and the price of the machine also depends on the type of compressor.”
The vendor informed that the best-selling item of tawa ice cream is roll and soft serve which costs Rs 450, while the all-time favourites are vanilla, caramel and peanut butter which cost Rs 200.
“Condensed milk and cream are the basic ingredients of tawa ice cream rolls, but customers can get a lot of variety including chocolate and fruit flavours like blueberry,” said another vendor Wadood in Rawalpindi.
Romaisa Mughal, a dietitian based in Lahore, told The PenPK.com that two normal scoops contain almost 207 calories and a high intake of saturated fats and sugar content can be damaging to human health. People should consume it less in quantity to maintain their good health.
Dietitian Mughal also advised ice cream lovers to take it once in two weeks, adding that it may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes type-II, obesity and high cholesterol levels otherwise.
“It is very important to consume low-fat pure dairy ice cream to stay healthy,” she advised, adding “rather it is good to consume yogurt ice cream as it contains probiotics, which make your gout healthy, Romaisa Mughal.
She said people should take a balanced diet that contains different classes of food.
Dietitian Mughal added that chocolate ice cream releases endorphins in your brain that can change a depressed mood into a happy mood. “We also call this hormone a happy hormone,” she maintained.
“If a person is taking three healthy meals daily then it is safe to consume ice cream once a week,” said Nutritionist Rimsha Tehseen.
Tehseen, however, advised the consumers to choose those ice cream spots that are clean and prepare the ice cream following the proper process of its preparation.
The nutritionist further mentioned that one serving of ice cream has 160 to 300 calories, but ice cream is not a great source of Vitamin D and calcium. She said ice cream has a small amount of dietary fibre that gives a feeling of fullness.
She said ice cream has a relatively higher rank on the glimax index, which means that glucose production would be higher in the human body with the consumption of ice cream.
“The process of making rolls is eye-catching and ice cream is loved by people of all ages even in cold weather,” said a customer at the tawa ice cream rolls stall.
“He enjoys ice cream with his family once a month, and he always chooses the same flavour which makes him guess the quality of the ice cream by tasting a single spoon,” said another customer.
However, health experts said that consumers should prefer healthy dairy ice cream over low-quality ice cream that is cheaper. Additional input from APP
