Death toll rises to 32 in Islamabad Imambargah suicide attack

Islamabad: The death toll from the suicide bombing at an Imambargah in Islamabad’s Tarlai area rose to at least 32 on Friday, while 169 others were injured, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked friendly countries and global leaders for their messages of sympathy and solidarity following the deadly attack.
In a statement shared on X, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to bring the perpetrators of the “heinous crime” to justice, vowing that the attackers’ malicious objectives would never succeed. He said Pakistan deeply values the expressions of support and unity received from across the world after the heartbreaking incident.

Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized that the continued support and cooperation of international partners have played a vital role in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to eliminate terrorism. He also urged the nation to remain united during this critical time, saying the resilient Pakistani people must stand firm in their determination to defeat terrorism.
According to Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon, the suicide bomber detonated himself at the entry gate of an Imambargah during Friday prayers when security personnel attempted to stop him. An emergency was declared at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and other hospitals in the capital to treat the injured.

Meanwhile, the attack drew widespread condemnation from the international community. Countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, Russia, Australia and Germany strongly denounced the targeting of worshippers.
In a statement, the US Embassy in Pakistan said it “strongly condemns” the terrorist attack in Islamabad that resulted in the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians. US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, reiterating that attacks on civilians and places of worship are completely unacceptable.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack, describing it as a heinous act and offering prayers for those who lost their lives. Saudi Arabia termed the bombing “open terrorism,” stressing that targeting worshippers and shedding innocent blood is unacceptable, while extending condolences to the Government of Pakistan and the families of the martyrs.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson likewise strongly denounced the attack, reaffirming Tehran’s opposition to terrorism and violent extremism in all forms and expressing sympathy with the victims’ families and the Pakistani nation.
Authorities said investigations into the attack are ongoing as security remains heightened in the capital.
