Data Leak Exposes Sensitive Info from DeepSeek AI

Islamabad: A cybersecurity firm based in New York, Wiz, revealed that it discovered a significant amount of sensitive data from the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek unintentionally exposed to the internet.
In a blog post published Wednesday, Wiz explained that its scans of DeepSeek’s infrastructure revealed over a million lines of unsecured data, which included digital software keys and chat logs containing prompts sent by users to the company’s free AI assistant.
Wiz’s chief technology officer, Ami Luttwak, confirmed that DeepSeek promptly secured the exposed data after being notified by the firm. “They took it down in less than an hour,” Luttwak said. “However, due to how easily it was found, we suspect we weren’t the only ones who noticed it.”
DeepSeek has yet to comment on the matter.
The company’s rapid rise following the launch of its AI assistant has garnered significant attention in China, while raising concerns in the US DeepSeek’s apparent ability to compete with OpenAI at a far lower cost has sparked doubts about the sustainability of US tech giants like Nvidia and Microsoft.
By Monday, DeepSeek had surpassed US competitor ChatGPT in downloads on Apple’s App Store, leading to a global selloff in tech stocks.
